Steve Mitchell Bio
Steve comes from a racing family. His father was first active in SCCA in the 1960's and some of Steve's earliest memory's are of being around racecars. After living in the Midwest and Europe for a number of years he ended up in El Segundo California for his teenage years. El Segundo was a unique place in the 1980's. There was a large cottage industry of aerospace job shops working with the southern California aerospace industry and there were several championship race teams based there as well. Steve started working at the age of 14 in an exotic car body shop. Surrounded by Ferrari's, Lamborghini's Shelby Cobra's and other exotics only served to fuel Steve's automotive passion.
Riding his bike through the town on the way home from work everyday he soon learned where all the teams like Cunningham Racing and Electramotive were based. One of his neighbors was Frank Honsowetz, Motorsports Manager for Nissan. He prepped an IMSA GTU car out of his garage down the street from Steve's house. This led to Steve getting a job at Electramotive in 1982 after the season ended. That was the end of the Datsun 280ZX Turbo days and the launch of the GTP car. Steve worked there through the start of the 1988 season and then moved to Nissan North America. The Electramotive team would go on to 4 drivers championships and 3 Manufacturer championships for Nissan. Steve held a number of positions within Nissan over the next 18 years and never was too far from the Motorsports department.
During the 1980's Steve built several successful SCCA Showroom Stock cars and IMSA Firehawk cars for his fathers race team. In addition to being crew chief, Steve also started driving as well. His best finish in IMSA was a 3rd overall at Road America out of 89 starters and several podiums in SCCA Regional competition. Lately he has been driving in Time Attack and Drift events.
Steve also built a number of project cars for himself and Nissan over the years. These cars have graced the covers and pages of numerous magazines as well as Nissan booths at SEMA show, LA Auto show. Probably the most famous is his 1992 Skyline GT-R and of course we can't forget the Disco Potato Sentra. In addition to the print magazines some of Steve's creations have shown up in TV commercials and shows. Most recently Steve has been building cars for the newest motorsports Drifting and Time Attack.
